Disulfide bonds, let's be friends

What are disulfide bonds and why are they important
As a hairstylist I love to change my hair color pretty often and because of that my hair has suffered the consequences pretty bad. It didn’t matter how many miracle hair masks and haircuts I had, the results where always the same. I know there are many people out there that can identify themselves with me and who knows, maybe you are one of them!
Even though I’m a hairdresser I'm very hesitant to try new products because, being honest, there are tons of them and they all promise the same thing, to help you have healthier hair. Applying a hydrating mask in you hair is a great way to help your hair stay hydrated which is definitely necessary. But a hair mask only works on the surface of the hair leaving behind the part we need to fix so bad, the inside!
Our hair structure is composed of keratin proteins and deep inside our hair is formed with hair bonds. Hair bonds are chains that connect the keratin proteins together. Our hair is composed of 95% of keratin.
The disulfide bonds
There are different types of hair bonds but the one in charge of the health of our hair, the texture and the strongest one in our hair is the disulfide bonds. If we want healthy hair, we need to take good care of them. As you can see disulfide bonds can be our best friend or our worst enemy. Everything will depend on how well we take care of them. Now, you might be thinking that you got the best hair mask out there and that’s it. But in reality, it's just not enough. Every time we style our hair with thermal tools or do any chemical service on the hair these bonds break. When this happens the hair receives a tremendous amount of damage that’s not visible to our eyes because I’m talking about what happens internally. I can assure you that no hair hydrating mask will repair that by itself.
Disulfide bonds got broken. Now what?
When disulfide bonds break, our hair changes completely not only on the outside, but internally as well and that’s the part we can’t see. There are two different reactions on our hair that might happen. The health of our hair will depend of which one of them happens.
1. Disulfide bond break and create sulfur hydrogen, sulfur hydrogen link with 1 part of oxygen. When this happens, everything is good and our hair is still healthy
2. Disulfide bond breaks and create sulfur hydrogen, sulfur hydrogen link with 3 parts of oxygen and it creates a reaction that it’s called Cysteic acid. What? That's right! You found the guilty one of eating out the protein of the hair! When this happen we will see breakage, split ends, brittle, dull hair and more.
Now you might ask, what should I do to help my hair recover from damage?.
OLAPLEX is a revolutionary patented hair reconstructor treatment. It’s a bond multiplier that was created to save us all from dull, brittle, damaged hair! OLAPLEX works by putting back together those hair bonds that got broken and preventing them to get linked with more oxygen particles. Do you remember? We want the sulfate with one oxygen particle! And as you already learned, this means healthy hair. OLAPLEX is that kind of product we all need to have in our bathroom! But be aware, OLAPLEX is not a hair mask! It’s a bond restorative treatment and is not intended to make your hair feel silky soft. You still need your hair mask to bring back that lost moisture of your hair.
BEFORE OLAPLEX AFTER OLAPLEX
If your hair has split ends, feels brittle, looks dull, it lacks of elasticity and you had tried every DIY or professional hair mask and still can’t see any changes, it's very probably that your hair needs a bit more help. This is when OLAPLEX will become your best pal!
As a hairdresser I recommend OLAPLEX, but as an OLAPLEX user I can’t recommend it enough. I would love for you to read more about each one of the 7 different products OLAPLEX has. I will be talking about it on another blog post. If you would like to know more, please subscribe to our email list so you can get notified of our next Blog post! Today I will not say that you will save some money when buying OLAPLEX but definitely in the long run it will cost you more if you don’t take care of your hair now.
